If you want a classic-looking bike with up-to date tech and components, there are a several options to choose from. One of the best out there is the Yamaha SR400. With classic styling straight from the original SR400 from the late 1970s, you'll enjoy an old school kind of ride on a new school kind of machine. If you love the late 1970s look but don't want to deal with all the upkeep that an old bike like that requires, this is the bike for you.
The SR400 packs a single cylinder 399cc, air-cooled four-stroke engine. Yamaha mated that engine to a five-speed transmission. It's a simple setup that makes the SR400 extremely easy to maintain. I love single-cylinder air-cooled bikes specifically for this reason and recommend them all the time.
While the SR400 isn't a speed demon, it does offer some more power than something like an older 250cc bike. It's mild, manageable and fun. It handles in-city riding with ease and can handle stints on the highway. I wouldn't recommend long highway rides, but it'll get the job done otherwise.
The Yamaha SR400 runs $5,999 brand new, but you can probably find a used bike for less. It's available in any color you want as long as its black. I love the simplicity of this motorcycle. If you're looking for a good starter bike that you'll likely want to keep for a while, I recommend this bike.
